MY ART: My art comes from my past; childhood through yesterday. My past is full and varied. My undergraduate education was unique by design. Under a new program at CU Boulder I proposed a three part curriculum specifically in Science, Natural, and Art.  (I don’t like being told what to do.)

My art reflects my interests, curiosity, and my heart. Therefore to categorize me is to watch a movie made by someone on the spectrum.  That may be related to a rule I have for my art. I call it the Rule of HOA. Be honest, open and authentic.

My technique may be unique. It starts with experimenting. In every piece I do I try something I have never done before. I am self taught. I make and break my own rules.

I started using colored markers and wax pencils. I began to work on a heated surface to easily melt and blend colors. I did everything I could think of to HIDE the fact I was using the lowly colored pencil. The same ones you used in elementary school. Pencils. I tried to make everything about my work look like a painting. Watercolor. Oils. Anything but pencils.

Recently I have begun to experiment with the opposite approach and HIGHLIGHT the pencils. It is fun and very different. .

BIO cont.

EDUCATION: Masters in Animal Ecology. 2 year Teacher Education at CU. Went through the Master Gardener program at CSU.

WORK: Like me, my work history has been varied.

I worked eight years at Miami Herald , later I worked for The Nature Conservancy as the South East Colorado Director.

I also taught animal ecology and ornithology at CU. Currently I work part time job at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. This is where I had my first job out of college taking care of the hippos and penguins.

TRAVEL: I have been fortunate to travel widely. Travel has helped shape my views.

Not only have I travelled the US but I’ve been to Europe several times.  Also Africa, Canada, the Philippines, Hawaii, Japan and unfortunately Vietnam. Finally I went through the Panama Canal where I saw a Nutria I in the wild. It’s the world’s largest rodent.

NAVY: I was in the navy when I sailed over 70,000 miles crossing the Pacific. I spent untold hours on watch. By myself, day and night.  Watching the ever changing sea.

These hours alone were like heaven to me. The time alone on watch changed my life. I say I met God September 25th, 1965 in the South China Sea during Super Storm  Bess. In the South China Sea. It was the worst storm of the year. It was a Category Five storm with 85 foot swells and 130 mph winds. I was sent topside during the height of the storm. The water shot straight up. I could not see the top of the wave. I think God was sitting on top of the wave.
